  • Company Profile: The Bank was established in 1912 and served as the state's foreign exchange bank upon the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. From 1949 to the early 1990s, the Bank continued to operate as a specialized foreign exchange business bank. Since 1994, the Bank has gradually transformed into a full-service commercial bank. In addition to commercial banking business, since 1983 and 1992, the Bank has primarily engaged in investment banking and insurance businesses through its subsidiaries in Hong Kong. The Bank also has a long history of operating banking business overseas, and currently possesses the most extensive overseas branch network among Chinese commercial banks, with operations spanning Hong Kong, Macau, and 25 foreign countries. In 1994, the Bank began its transformation from a specialized foreign exchange and foreign trade bank into a state-owned commercial bank. In 1994 and 1995, the Bank's Hong Kong and Macau branches became note-issuing banks in Hong Kong and Macau, respectively. In 2003, the State Council selected the Bank as one of the pilot banks for joint-stock reform and injected USD 22.5 billion in capital. On August 26, 2004, the Bank was wholly restructured into a joint-stock commercial bank, fully assuming the assets and liabilities of Bank of China. Subsequently, the Bank introduced investors such as RBS China, Asian Financial, UBS, Asian Development Bank, and the Social Security Fund. In May 2006, the Bank successfully issued 29,403,878,000 H-shares (including the full exercise of the over-allotment option) and was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on June 1, 2006.
